In my first year of residency, I was seeing a male patient with a fourteen year history of systemic lupus erythematosis and antiphospholipid syndrome. He suffered from sudden loss of renal function, a drop in cardiac output, hematurea and severe thrombocytopenea. He was eventually diagnosed as catastrophic antiphospholipid syndrome, a lethal variant of the antiphospholipid syndrome. Repeated plasma exchange, steroid pulse therapy, infusions of concentrated platelets and other therapies could only tempolarily releave the thrombocytopenea. One night, I logged on to the internet and found this book. Hoping to find some kind of help, I went to Amazon.com and bought it. Although I live in rural Japan, the book arrived in two days. I found in the book that Dapsone was effective for thrombocytopenea in antiphospholipid syndrome. My boss gave me the go-ahead and we tried it. It worked. The book and Amazon.com saved the patient's life. This is an informative book by the world's foremost authorities on this disease. If you have any interest in this little-known malady, this is the book to buy.
