For less than ideal situations, I use +3 : Powerful, but the surrounding area stays in manageable focus when I look away from my reading. For a combination of very small print & poor lighting, FORGET THE SURROUNDING AREA: Get the +5, & comfortably, really -read- the tiny stuff. The only hassle is you -have- to take them off when you look away, your surroundings will be dizzyingly out of focus.
