Owner Reviews, Ratings, Comments and Criticism I love Gabriel Garcia Marquez for the same reason, I think, that I love Faulkner. Like Faulkner's characters in the mythical Yoknapatawpha County, Marquez's characters are alway driven by inane superstitions and obsessions. However like Faulkner, Marquez always treats them with the reverence and dignity they are owed as human beings, no matter what kind of craziness they get up to. Like Faulkner, he doesn't apologize for them or justify what they do - or even spruce them up a little for the camera. He loves them the same way I loved my incredibly absent-minded grandmother, precisely because they are so "complicated" (that's what the minister said at her funeral). And because he loves and treasures every little idiosyncracy, the reader does, too.
Unlike Faulkner, Marquez incorporates a number of supernatural events into his plots - things that wouldn't happen in real life. However they are probably normal for the culture he writes about - in that the lower and indigenous classes in much of Latin American belive that supernatural events are common everyday occurrences.
I enjoyed Love in the Time of Cholera for the same reason I enjoyed 100 Years of Solitude - not because of the plot (I suspect most readers could really care less what happens at the end) - but because of the rich tapestry of crazy, colorful characters.
