Grade 7-12 Stedman not only describes the symptoms, causes, and treatments of colds and flu here, but does a good job of explaining the respiratory system, the nature of bacteria and viruses, and the immune system. Excellent photographs of viruses and both black-and-white and color illustrations and diagrams further elucidate the clearly written text. Words included in the glossary are starred in the text, and an index enhances the book's reference value, expecially for junior and senior high health classes. Of particular interest are the explanations of each of the symptoms of colds and fluwhy the body responds with coughs, sneezes, runny nose, watery eyes to these micro-invaders. Those needing additional material on immunology should be referred to Dorothy Hinshaw Patent's Germs! (Holiday, 1983) which includes many exceptional photos, and Alan E.
